What is By Lawyers?

By Lawyers was born out of the desire to make the practice of law a little easier, safer and more profitable for the general practitioner. We are now Australia’s leading library of practical legal guides; written by lawyers, for lawyers.

There are many publications written about the law, but many of them are written by academics with little knowledge of practical day by day application. Our publications are written to assist lawyers with their day-to-day practice by guiding them from the start to the finish of every matter.

Every piece of content is authored or reviewed by a lawyer or barrister practicing in the state or federal jurisdiction where the legislation applies.

Our publications include over 15,000 forms and precedents and more than 135 individual guides.

What is a By Lawyers guide?

A By Lawyers guide offers a practitioner a strong practical commentary on a particular area of law accompanied by a full suite of precedents/forms, and pulled together in a sequential guide to follow from the start to finish of a matter.

Can I purchase a precedent individually?

Unfortunately, none of our precedents are available for individual purchase as they are all part of a certain guide. In order to access a specific precedent, you will need to subscribe to the publication it is in.

Who are the By Lawyers authors?

We have an in-house team of solicitors and other support staff as well as more than 30 practising solicitor/barrister authors from around the country. To learn more, please visit our Authors page.

How often are publications updated?

Our team reviews and updates our content to reflect legislative changes on a daily basis. We are also constantly adding new precedents and matter commentary to enrich our publications.

Our users can always be confident that they’re working with the latest forms, precedents and matter commentary.

What is Obiter?

Obiter is the blog for the By Lawyers community. Besides interesting articles, it includes Publication Updates, Tips and Tricks, Mentor Q+As, and more!

How do I know what a publication includes?

At the bottom of every publication page, it shows which guides are included in the publication.

Each guide then displays a Table of Contents which sets out a complete list of all precedents, forms and commentaries included in the guide.

All documents with a   Cnext to them, are the commentary and come in PDF format. They can also be downloaded, printed or saved for future use.

All documents with a W  next to them, are precedents or forms and come in Word format. They can be downloaded, printed, or saved for future use. To preview the first page of any precedent, simply click on it.
